Where else can you learn about the benefits of a benefits led approach?

When looking for case studies and viewpoints on Benefits Management and Benefits Led projects, it is easy to get bogged down in different understandings of the term (pharmacy, HR, etc.) and cookie cutter low grade consulting spin.

Below are a few links to sites and articles which describe benefits led projects - together with our view of them. Some may be of use to you in understanding benefits led development around the world..

OCG "Managing Benefits"

A fairly process driven approach to benefits related change that in our view is light on ensuring understand of what the real benefits are, how the wrong metrics can be counterproductive, and particularly the human dimension of the problem. We doubt with the approach suggested that any programme will be truly 'benefits led', rather it will tick a box and miss much of the benefit.

The OGC website has been undergoing updates recently and as a consequence there is a degree of broken links, lost files and confusion. Hopefully what will emerge will have a revised focus on benefits led solutions and gaining value for money from government programmes.

MOD - Benefits Realisation Management Guidance (PPT)

A MOD presentation following the OGC template, but with slightly more recognision of the inpact of people on the process. Little methodology on how to tie benefits desired to programme enacted. Benfits addendum rather than benefits led.

"Transforming, reforming technologies" (PDF)

Talk of a benefits led revitilisation of education paradigms and methodologies. None to soon in our view and with some imagination in approach which we would hope to see taken further.

"Measuring benefits against targets and objectives" Western Australia Police Service (PPT)

Good presentation on the needs for benefits led programmes. In particular it moves the attention from the finances of a project, onto the benefits gaining - a very positive move in public sector initiatives. Needs to highlight the human dimension in achieving benefits and the ways in which qualitiative human aspect often drive delivery of benefits.

"Benefits Management Annex" Department of Finance and Personnel, Spring project

Introduction, planning, and delivering benefits management on DFP projects. Like much of the guidance derived from the OGC basis, we feel it tends to underplay the human aspects of benefits led projects and the ways in which success or failure are often determined by very tacit aspects. However the advice is concise and useable.

"Benefits First, Technology Last – The Future For Local Government"

An explanation of one view of a benefits led programme, abeit with a focus a fairly mechanistic viewpoint and with limitations on the ways of addressing success in understanding the tacit<>measurable interface. Concentration on IT.
